Picking the tree

Picking the tree
  • Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
Placing the tree
  • Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2" from the base of the trunk.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
  • Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
Lighting the tree
  • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer's instructions for number of light strands to connect.
  • Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
After Christmas
  • Get rid of the tree after Christmas. Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside against the home. Check with your local community to find a recycling program. Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer.

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WINTER

PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WINTER

You wouldn’t head out into cold weather without bundling up, and your vehicle faces similar challenges as the temperatures drop. Take the time and check out these cold weather tips to prepare your car or truck for winter – your vehicle will run longer and more efficiently.

What You Can Do

  • Make sure you have a heavy-duty ice scraper and snow brush in your vehicle.
  • Cold weather reduces tire pressure, so check tire pressure often. See your Owner’s Manual for directions and details.
  • In severe winter temperatures, you may have to change the grade of your engine oil. Check your Owner’s Manual for the viscosity grade recommended for your vehicle’s engine.
Check your wiper blades. Cold temperatures can make blades brittle, and ice on the windshield can cause nicks in the blades, decreasing performance.
If you’re planning a trip, take a blanket, extra-warm clothing, a collapsible shovel, a bag of road salt and an extra bottle of windshield-washer fluid.
  • Put on snow tires if you live in major snow-belt areas. Check your Owner’s Manual for details and recommended practices.

Take a Class— Save a Life!

Take a Class— Save a Life!

Every year, more than 250,000 people die from a sudden heart attack while working, playing, shopping or spending time at home. The numbers are staggering. Would you know what to do if a friend, loved one or colleague was struggling to breathe, or even worse, unconscious and not breathing at all?
In these situations, every second counts. Knowing CPR could help you keep a person alive during the critical minutes before medical professionals arrive on the scene. That’s why it’s so important for EVERYONE—from novices to medical professionals—to learn CPR. As an American Heart Association® (AHA) Training Center, we are dedicated to strengthening the chain of survival by bringing an array of CPR and first-aid training classes to our community.
